《臭老九》 2024
17.5"x72"x1.75"
walnut offcut, tampico fibre, metal chain, dowel
In this piece, I envision myself as a teacher during the Chinese Cultural Revolution, exploring the recontextualization of play and labor amidst a backdrop of oppression. Scholars were often punished through menial tasks like sweeping and cleaning the streets and toilets, stripping them of their dignity and intellectual identity. The broom's handle is transformed into a nunchuck-like form, referencing Chinese martial arts not only as a celebration of cultural heritage but also as a metaphor for resistance. Chinese martial arts aim to 'win' not just physically but mentally and spiritually, embodying a way of life that emphasizes discipline, resilience, and inner strength. In this context, martial arts becomes a means to navigate and combat oppression.
