"Serving the People" is a provocative series exploring the intersection of authority, belief, and labor. Through the seamless integration of traditional furniture joinery, deities like Guan Yu—the Chinese god of war—merge with stools and other common objects. The craft itself becomes an act of rebellion, dismantling the sanctity of these icons to create tools for everyday use. This stool piercing Guan Yu statue suggests a duality: reverence for craft and irreverence for oppressive ideals. Chinese culture often projects contradictory attributes onto figures of authority, blending sensitivity with cruelty. This work critiques these projections, questioning their role in sustaining hierarchies of power. By reducing revered forms to utilitarian objects, the series reimagines authority in service to the people, challenging inherited systems of control. "Serving the People" transforms objects of veneration into tools for the working class, weaponizing craft as a means of social revolution.
