I imagined myself being a teacher during the Chinese Cultural Revolution; how would I recontextualize the ideas of play and labor when scholars were punished in the form of having to sweep and clean the streets and toilets. The calligraphy brush embodies a silent form of protest in the shape of the most powerful tool within the intellectual’s repertoire. I aim to challenge the viewer to consider the resilience of the human spirit in the face of oppression and the enduring power of art as a mode of resistance. Through this work, I invite dialogue about the intersections of identity, politics, and the significance of reclaiming one's voice in times of adversity.
